Wallace & Grommet

I prefer to be driven by the spirit of "Why would you make this?" for the bulk of my projects, however I'd like to tell a tale of necessity being the mother of my invention. Much like anyone else with too many ideas, I like to keep random thoughts jotted down in a physical book. In one of my back pockets, I would keep my smartphone, and my idea journal in the other back pocket. Potential books, things to doodle, the doodle themselves, lists, reminders, whatever, it goes in my back pocket book. It wasn't until the hustle and bustle of commuting laid claim to my book that I realized that perhaps I needed to develop an idea book specifically for me and my airheadedness.

As I was on my way to work, I reached for my back pocket book and it wasn't there. It must have fallen out while I was transferring trains or something, I truly don't know. I just know that this was a day I definitely left home without it, and by the time I boarded my third train, it was missing. Feeling defeated, I realized that this was an opportunity. Knowing that I cannot be trusted to remember my house and office keys, I purchased a chain to keep them on my pants. It's not enough to know that I'm a forgetful person or that I am easily distracted. It would be irresponsible to not take precaution against the pitfalls of my nature. So I purchase a chain to keep my keys, and more relevantly to this story, I work on developing a small book meant for pockets that I cannot lose.

I am still working on the design. I have purchased small books in bulk and punched a hole in some and connected a chain to that. I am grateful for this experience because due to this experiment I am more familiar with grommet and eyelet tools and from this I was able to make my favorite bookmark ever, the nunchuck bookmarks. Stay tuned for more news on this chain/book idea, because I think it would be really cool to make something out of necessity instead of just for decoration.
